The moment AI can act, not just answer, the rules change.
Generative AI gave us systems that could produce. Agentic AI takes the next step: it can act.
It can book a flight, operate software, write and test code, interact with APIs, or control physical systems. The underlying technology is often still a language model — but wrapped with tools, memory and the ability to execute actions.

That sounds like the obvious evolution of AI.
It isn’t.
The hard part is no longer generating the answer. It is knowing what to do — and knowing when not to do it.
MIT’s Phillip Isola points out a fundamental limitation: we have far less training data for real-world actions than we have for language. An agent booking a flight has to deal with changing interfaces, unexpected errors and ambiguous situations. Much of that has to be learned through trial and error.
This is why coding agents are currently among the most compelling applications. Code provides something critically important: feedback. An agent can write code, run it, see whether it works, and iterate.
But the bigger question isn’t technological.
It is organizational.
How much decision-making are we actually willing to delegate?
For low-risk, repeatable work, the answer should be: a lot.
For medicine, security, financial decisions or strategic business choices, handing over the steering wheel is a very different proposition. And there is another danger: deskilling. If agents increasingly do our thinking for us, we may lose the ability to do the work ourselves — precisely when we still need to supervise the machines.
My take:
The winners of the agentic era won’t be the companies that automate the most. They’ll be the companies that design the best boundaries between human judgment and machine autonomy.
The real competitive advantage won’t be having an AI agent.
It will be knowing what to let it do.
